CUMC researchers discover ‘cell of origin' for esophageal cancer

Columbia University Medical Center researchers have identified cells in the upper digestive tract that can give rise to Barrett's esophagus, a precursor to esophageal cancer. The discovery of this "cell of origin" promises to accelerate the development of more precise screening tools and therapies for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma, the fastest growing form of cancer in the U.S.

PhotoMedex receives multi-million dollar order from AMICO Group to purchase XTRAC laser systems

PhotoMedex, Inc. announced that the Company has received from AMICO Group, its distributor in the Middle East, a multi-million dollar order to purchase XTRAC laser systems that will be installed in hospitals throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The order includes customary terms and conditions, including advanced payments and letters of credit covering the purchase order. Delivery is expected to be in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

Drugs that target DNA in later-stage cancers could be effective in treating breast tumors

Breast cancers that arise sporadically, rather than through inheritance of certain genes, likely start with defects of DNA repair mechanisms that allow environmentally triggered mutations to accumulate, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
