FAU researchers receive NSF grant to model COVID-19 spread using big data analytics

Public health efforts depend heavily on predicting how diseases like COVID-19 spread across the globe. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University's College of Engineering and Computer Science in collaboration with LexisNexis Risk(R)Solutions, a global data technology and advanced analytics leader, have received a rapid research (RAPID) grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a model of COVID-19 spread using innovative big data analytics techniques and tools.

Examining the effects of trade rules on public health, access to medicines

In this post in the Huffington Post's "Impact" blog, Tido von Schoen-Angerer, executive director of the Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Access to Essential Medicines Campaign, examines the interface between trade rules and public health, discussing the implications of the Doha Declaration on public health since its inception 10 years ago, and addresses the question of how "countries balance the need to protect public health against patent rights that lead to high medicine prices and limited access for people in need."

JAM study highlights emerging problem in addiction therapy

A Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM) study was cited in a recent Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) series highlighting an emerging problem in addiction therapy: the diversion and misuse of the medication buprenorphine.

Health IT Roundup: Stimulus funding pushes effort to wire doctors' offices

The Orlando Sentinel: Although regional plans to wire doctors' offices have circulated for some time, "this promises to be the year doctors go digital, allowing them to share patients' medical histories or pull up diagnostic test results with the click of a mouse. Health care experts predict it will be one of the biggest health care developments of 2010." Stimulus grants and incentives to get doctors and hospitals to go digital may push the earlier plans and pilot projects to fruition (Quintero, 1/8).
