Patient participation in high-risk research could benefit novel drug trials

Individuals have a right to participate in risky research trials, which might harm their health or even kill them, and institutional review boards (known as research ethics committees in the UK) – which are responsible for deciding whether a particular research trial can take place in a given institution – are potentially impeding the progress of research by rejecting such studies on ethical grounds, according to a Viewpoint published in The Lancet today [Wednesday 18 September].

Meat pies meatier than before: Choice report

Consumer alert group "Choice" tested 20 frozen meat pies available in supermarket chains nationally. They found that at present meat pies contain more meat than they did four years back. To qualify as a meat pie, the product should be at least 25% meat as per the guidelines from 2007. Coles home brand was the only brand that failed to meet the content standard. Australians spend more than $127 million and eat 18,500 tonnes of meat pies every year.

Genetic marker predicts earlier onset of prostate cancer in Caucasian men

Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers have identified a genetic marker that is associated with an earlier onset of prostate cancer in Caucasian men who have a family history of prostate cancer. If the data are confirmed, the marker may help clinicians personalize prostate cancer screening.

Oncogene has similar biochemical functions in ancestral metazoan and in humans

To find the causes for cancer, biochemists and developmental biologists at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, retraced the function of an important human cancer gene 600 million years back in time. For the first time, they have identified the oncogene myc in a fresh water polyp and they have shown that this oncogene has similar biochemical functions in ancestral metazoan and in humans.
