WellPoint to re-label administrative costs as "medical care": Consumer Watchdog calls for probe

Consumer Watchdog called on the Obama Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services today to probe insurance giant WellPoint Inc. in light of an electronic message to investors describing how it would simply re-label administrative costs as "medical care" in response to the new health reform law. The message follows revelations that WellPoint, parent company of Anthem Blue Cross, also intentionally padded already huge premium increases in California, just in case regulators demanded reductions.

Mylan Pharmaceuticals markets FDA approved first generic version of Sanofi Aventis' BenzaClin

Mylan Inc. (Nasdaq: MYL) today announced that its subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun to market 1% Clindamycin and 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Gel based on an agreement with licensing partner Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, a subsidiary of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. The preparation is the first generic version of Sanofi Aventis' BenzaClin(R) to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

New study examines potential impact of breast density notification legislation in U.S. women

Mammographically-dense breasts - those that show more breast and connective tissue versus fat in a mammogram image - are recognized as a risk factor for developing breast cancer and can also hamper an accurate reading of a mammogram. National legislation currently under consideration would require the disclosure of mammographic breast density information to women with dense breasts, as well as encourage the consideration of supplemental screening for those women.
