CINJ trial targets new combination therapy for advanced solid tumors

Building off recent laboratory discoveries relating to how cancer cells become resistant to therapies that attempt to starve cancer, scientists at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) are now applying that knowledge to a process in which cancer cells eat themselves to downsize and resist therapy. The ultimate goal of this effort is to improve upon current anticancer treatments.

BMA response to BMJ article "Challenges to implementing the national programme for information technology"

Commenting on research published in today's (5/8/05) BMJ, which finds that the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) has failed to properly engage NHS staff, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's Head of Science and Ethics, said:

Agricultural alliance releases report calling for efforts to prevent climate change from affecting global food security

The "food-security arm of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research [CGIAR], a global alliance of agricultural experts," launched a report Friday at the U.N. climate change conference in Copenhagen that "calls for an intensive effort to speed the implementation of dozens of agriculture-related technologies in developing countries, which are the most vulnerable to climate change," the Globe and Mail reports.

Low levels of Vitamin D are associated with a higher risk of premature death

Recent research has shown that lower blood levels of vitamin D increase the risk of dying early.
