Identification of specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies with cross-neutralization potency

A team of scientists from the USA and Canada recently characterized the cross-neutralizing potency of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies isolated from COVID-19 patients. The findings reveal that some of the isolated antibodies targeting the spike RBD and the S2 subunit are capable of cross-neutralizing other members of the human beta-coronavirus family.

Emergent awarded $107M HHS BARDA contract to develop large-scale manufacturing of BioThrax

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. announced today that it has signed a contract valued at up to $107 million with the Office of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to develop and obtain regulatory approval for large-scale manufacturing of BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) in Building 55. Building 55 is the company's large-scale state-of-the-art vaccine manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan.

Pneumonia doesn't appear to harm HIV-positive patients any more than those without HIV

In a two-year study that documented cases in 26 hospitals in 11 countries including the United States, Canada, South Africa, Chile and Spain, outcomes for 58 HIV-positive patients with CAP, or community-acquired pneumonia (pneumonia contracted outside of hospitals) were compared with outcomes for 174 HIV-negative patients suffering a similar severity of CAP.

Use of antidepressants during pregnancy linked to neonatal abstinence syndrome in infants

Almost one-third of 60 newborn infants whose mothers took antidepressants during pregnancy experienced neonatal abstinence syndrome, a type of withdrawal with symptoms that include high-pitched crying, tremors and disturbed sleep, according to a study in the February issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
