Medical experts call for accurate, standardized estrogen testing methods

Unreliable estrogen measurements have had a negative impact on the treatment of and research into many hormone-related cancers and chronic conditions. To improve patient care, a panel of medical experts has called for accurate, standardized estrogen testing methods in a statement published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

New focus on long-term effects of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster spread significant radioactive contamination over more than 3500 square miles of the Japanese mainland in the spring of 2011. Now several recently published studies of Chernobyl, directed by Timothy Mousseau of the University of South Carolina and Anders M-ller of the Universit- Paris-Sud, are bringing a new focus on just how extensive the long-term effects on Japanese wildlife might be.

Cyanotech receives Nasdaq non-compliance notice

Cyanotech Corporation has been notified by the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel that it is not in compliance with its continued listing requirements under Nasdaq Listing Rules 5605(b)(1) and 5605(c)(2)(A) due to having only three independent directors of six total directors on its Board and fewer than three independent directors on its audit committee, while David I. Rosenthal serves as Interim President and CEO, as announced on March 1, 2010.

More adults washing hands in public restrooms

In the latest observational study sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute- (formerly The Soap and Detergent Association), 85% of adults washed their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% in 2007. The 85% total was actually the highest observed since these studies began in 1996. The results were announced at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, an infectious disease meeting sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology.

Researchers focus on uncoupling obesity from diabetes

About 422 million people around the world, including more than 30 million Americans, have diabetes. Approximately ninety percent of them have type 2 diabetes. People with this condition cannot effectively use insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas that helps the body turn blood sugar into energy.
