Study explores safety and efficacy of scoop and run approach in Philadelphia

A new study from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has found no significant difference in adjusted overall survival rates between gunshot and stabbing (so-called penetrating trauma injuries) victims in Philadelphia whether they were transported to the emergency department by the police department or the emergency medical services division of the fire department.

Prostate cancer: Drug-resistant, metastasis-causing cells can produce exponentially growing tumors

The cover for issue 1 of Oncotarget features Figure 2, "Results in clinical trials," published in "Drug resistant cells with very large proliferative potential grow exponentially in metastatic prostate cancer" by Blagoev, et al. which reported that most metastatic cancers develop drug resistance during treatment and continue to grow, driven by a subpopulation of cancer cells unresponsive to the therapy being administered.

Study: Many patients with schizophrenia and epilepsy die before reaching the age of fifty

Patients who suffer from schizophrenia and epilepsy are particularly vulnerable. In the study, the researchers followed more than 1,5 mio. people and classified them according to whether they were diagnosed with epilepsy, schizophrenia or the combination of epilepsy and schizophrenia on their twenty-fifth birthday.

AMS reports positive results from clinical trial of MiniArc Single-Incision Sling System for SUI

American Medical Systems® (AMS), a leading provider of world-class devices and therapies for both male and female pelvic health, today announced results of a prospective, multi-center study on their market leading MiniArc Single-Incision Sling System for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The study concludes that MiniArc efficacy rates for negative cough stress test (CST) and 1-hr Pad Weight Test (PWT) at 12 months were 90.6 percent and 84.5 percent, respectively.
