Study highlights need for culturally relevant programs to educate Black communities on hepatitis B

Hepatitis B disproportionately impacts U.S. Blacks, including African American and Haitian Blacks. Both communities suffer from widespread misinformation and access to care issues that might avert disease detection and prevention, according to a study published in Cancer Causes & Control by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Rapid rise in ATV-related injuries and deaths involving kids

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were introduced in this country in the 1970s. Currently, there are approximately 9.5 million ATVs in use and more than 150,000 reported ATV-related injuries in this country annually. The rapid rise in ATV-related injuries is due to increased use and also to the production of larger, faster, and more powerful vehicles, according to a review article that was recently published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

AstraZeneca to take over Probiodrug's CDK9 inhibitor program

Probiodrug AG announced today the transfer of its experimental cyclin-dependent kinase 9 inhibitor program to AstraZeneca. The transaction includes the sale to AstraZeneca of a lead molecule and back-up compounds with the associated intellectual property. CDK9, which has been implicated in the transcriptional regulation of genes involved in proliferation and inflammation, is a promising target for the treatment of both cancer and inflammatory diseases.

Attorney of Colson Hicks Eidson files wrongful death complaint on behalf of passenger killed on Macarthur Causeway

Attorney Ervin A. Gonzalez, partner at the Coral Gables-based law firm Colson Hicks Eidson, filed a wrongful death complaint in the 11th Judicial Circuit Court in Miami-Dade County on behalf of the family of the late Dr. Malcolm Lloyd, passenger in the Lamborghini that was involved in a fatal car crash on April 24th on MacArthur Causeway.

Cancer drug trials focus on progression-free survival and overlook health-related quality of life

A McMaster University-led review and analysis of randomized clinical trials is questioning whether interventions which prolong progression-free survival in cancer patients, improve their health-related quality of life.
