Ocera Therapeutics presents Phase 2 proof-of-concept study results of AST-120 in non-constipating IBS

Ocera Therapeutics, Inc. presented results yesterday from a Phase 2 proof-of-concept study of AST-120 (spherical carbon adsorbent) in the treatment of patients with non-constipating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) at DDW, the annual meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association. Data showed that subjects treated with AST-120 responded in a consistent manner with reduction in pain better than placebo at week four and at week eight, the primary time point for analysis. The company plans to initiate a Phase 2b study evaluating AST-120 in non-constipating IBS.

Adding antiviral agent to corticosteroids to treat facial paralysis not linked to improved recovery

Adding an antiviral agent to corticosteroids for treatment of Bell's palsy (a condition characterized by partial facial paralysis) is not associated with improved recovery of facial movement function, according to a meta-analysis of previously published studies in the June issue of Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

Utah preferred prescription drug list savings less than projected

Utah's Medicaid preferred prescription drug list in its first year has reduced spending by nearly $546,000, but the savings fell about $2.75 million short of original estimates by the Utah Department of Health, according to Michael Hales, the director of the state Division of Health Care Financing, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Multiplexed capillary isoelectric focusing increases efficiency in protein measurements

The Springer journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC) has chosen Oluwatosin O. Dada (34) as the recipient of its Best Paper Award 2010. Dada is the lead author of a paper in ABC on capillary isoelectric focusing. The award, accompanied by 1,000 euros, was created by Springer to help exceptional young scientists establish their research careers. The ABC Best Paper Award has been given since 2005.
