Researchers identify how mosquito's immune system attacks specific infections

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have determined a new mechanism by which the mosquitoes' immune system can respond with specificity to infections with various pathogens, including the parasite that causes malaria in humans, using one single gene.

Nurses stop bed closures as government makes offer

Nurses who were closing down beds over staffing issues have stopped but have not ruled out the possibility of more bed closures in the future. Beds at the Tamworth Base Hospital that were closed before Christmas re-opened yesterday (Thursday). A total 570 beds were reopened. The New South Wales Nurses Association is considering an offer by the State Government. The protest was in favour of a standard minimum ratio of one nurse for every four patients.

Regional PACS networks may be useful in reducing cost and radiation exposure associated with trauma

According to a study in the Sept. issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology, using a combination of the Internet and compact discs (CD) to transfer images during inter-hospital transfer is associated with much lower repeat imaging rates, suggesting that regional PACS networks may be useful for reducing cost and radiation exposure associated with trauma.
