Closing the 'cancer divide' between developing and developed countries

Noting "there is a huge 'cancer divide' between rich and poor," with more than half of new cancer cases and almost two-thirds of all cancer deaths occurring in developing countries, this year's World Cancer Day theme, "Together It Is Possible," "calls on all individuals, organizations and governments to do their part to reduce premature deaths from cancers by 25 percent by 2025," Felicia Knaul, secretariat for the Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries, and Jonathan Quick, president of Management Sciences for Health, write in a Huffington Post opinion piece.

Two radiologists win Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation Leaders in Innovation Award

Two visionaries of interventional radiology were recently awarded the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation Leaders in Innovation Award. The awards, to Lindsay Machan, M.D., FSIR, an interventional radiologist at Vancouver Hospital, British Columbia, and Kieran J. Murphy, M.D., FSIR, an interventional radiologist at the University of Toronto, both in Canada, were announced March 4 during the society's Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta.

Ethicon Endo-Surgery today announced the launch of two new surgical staplers designed to optimize efficiencies and compression during open surgery. The Ethicon Endo-Surgery Linear Cutter 55/75, engineered with novel staple technology and selectable staple heights in one cartridge, provides superior hemostasis for patients and improved efficiencies to surgeons, nurses and facility administrations. The Ethicon Endo-Surgery Intraluminal Stapler, designed with a new tissue compression scale, provides surgeons improved flexibility and control so that they can address the individual needs of each patient.

Black light helps determine disease extent of melasma in pregnant women

Researchers at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine have found that using a black light, or Wood's light, helps dermatologists determine disease extent of melasma, a hyperpigmentation condition that causes brown and gray patches to appear on the face.
