New approach to advance quality of pregnancy monitoring

The University of California, San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering announced today that it is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bioengineering Professor Todd Coleman, in collaboration with Materials Science and Engineering Professor John A. Rogers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will pursue an innovative global health and development research project, titled "Epidermal Electronics for Continuous Pregnancy Monitoring."

New study questions the safety of football turf; warrants further research

According to a study presented today at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), rates for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries and eversion ankle sprains (where the foot twists outward) are significantly higher in the National Football League (NFL) games played on FieldTurf, an artificial playing surface, as compared to natural grass.

UNITAID, EGPAF launch new initiative to scale up HIV diagnosis among newborns in African countries

UNITAID and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation today launched an initiative that will dramatically scale up HIV diagnosis among newborns in nine African countries. In partnership with ministries of health, this initiative will make "point-of-care" testing more widely available to HIV-exposed infants early in their lives, when they are most at risk of dying, and enable those diagnosed with the virus to be put on lifesaving treatment more quickly.
