"The Obama administration on Thursday released a sweeping statement of its national security goals," the Los Angeles Times reports. The 52-page document "calls for the United States to strengthen international institutions, to heed treaties and norms, and to build stronger ties to allies, including to the emerging powers of India, Brazil and China.

Y chromosome may be the link that passes heart disease risk from father to son

The study, published in The Lancet, focused on genetic markers on the Y chromosome — which is present only in male DNA (women have two X chromosomes) — and found that men with a certain genetic variant were 50% more likely to have coronary artery disease than those without it. The increased risk was independent of other contributors to heart disease such as age, weight, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking.

China must bring together different agencies to address water shortages, policy paper says

In a policy paper published in Science on Thursday, researchers praised China's January 2011 plan to address water shortages and conservation in the nation, but "the researchers said this commitment won't be enough unless disparate agencies learn to communicate and coordinate with each other," Reuters reports.
