Health insurers in Florida rank lower

Health insurers in Florida rank lower on a series of quality measures compared with insurance companies in other parts of the country, according to a report released on Monday by the Florida Health Care Coalition, the Miami Herald reports. FHCC - a coalition of Florida employers including Macy's, county governments and school boards - studied the state's six largest insurers.

Reluctant Australian sperm donors forces fertility clinics to import from U.S.

With the shortage of sperm donors the Queensland Fertility Group, the largest fertility facility in Townsville has resorted to importing sperm from United States. This facility, some 1,300 Kilometers from Brisbane is reportedly paying $700-800 an ampule for the imported sperm. This is a new situation. Earlier the facility had a large number of donors of which a huge number were the university students but there has been a steady decline in donors with many north Queensland men, or even Australian men who are not prepared to donate.

Study demonstrates possibility of curing hepatitis C without use of interferon

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced the full results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, from a Phase II clinical trial in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 who had not responded to prior therapy with PEG-interferon alfa and ribavirin ('null responders').

High intracoronary attenuation significantly improves diagnostic accuracy in 64-slice CT-CA of the coronary arteries

For the study, 170 patients with suspected coronary artery disease underwent CT-CA. The average vascular attenuation measured in the aortic root and in coronary arteries was used to divide the population into two groups of 85 patients each, one with low attenuations and one with high.
