Quick increase of calcium concentration in cells rapidly trigger Aurora-A kinase enzyme activity

Aurora-A kinase (AurA) is an enzyme that is hyperactive in many cancers and drives tumor cell proliferation. Several AurA inhibitors are currently being tested in clinical trials to see if they slow tumor growth. Now, researchers in the Developmental Therapeutics Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center have identified an activation signal for AurA. They report in the September 7 issue of Nature Communications that a quick increase in the calcium concentration in a cell rapidly triggers AurA kinase activity.

Study shows hospitals can streamline procedures to reduce the time they take to treat heart attack patients

The NIH-sponsored study, published in the September Journal of the American College of Cardiology, reports methods for delivery of rapid care based on the experiences of top programs. Studies have found that while every minute counts, few hospitals are able to perform at levels recommended by national guidelines.

Age of onset of obesity linked to higher diabetes risk

A new study shows that the timing of onset of obesity is linked to the risk of type 2 diabetes. The paper, published in the journal Diabetologia, examines how the direction of BMI change, as well as the age when obesity began and the number of years a person is obese (obese-years, the product of degree and duration of obesity) over the period of early adult life are reflected in diabetes risk.
