News stories about H1N1 have dominated the media during the past few months, but throughout 2009 journalists reported on a variety of other health and health-care issues that affected the lives of nurses, patients and all Ontarians. As the year draws to a close, the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) is asking reporters, editors and producers to look back over their work and enter the 12th annual Awards for Excellence in Health-Care Reporting.
A new report from the Health Protection Agency shows that around three-quarters of injecting drug users (IDUs) have been homeless at some point. In addition, those who have been homeless have higher levels of injecting risk and associated infections, primarily through the sharing of needles and low standards of hygiene.
Among low-income, uninsured, or publicly insured women ages 25-64 years who were not up to date on cervical cancer screening, 72% perceived financial barriers to screening.
If the obvious reasons for avoiding recreational drug use aren't off-putting enough, physicians have yet another detrimental consequence to add to the list - crusty, purplish areas of dead skin that are extremely painful and can open the door to nasty infections.
