Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have isolated a new type of energy-burning fat cell in adult humans which they say may have therapeutic potential for treating obesity.
Students who receive sexuality education, including refusal skills training, before college matriculation are at lower risk of experiencing sexual assault during college, according to new research published today in PLOS ONE.
Despite considerable progress in research to understand the health effects of vitamin D, experts convened by the NIH to review the available data found major gaps in the evidence. The data are strongest in the area of bone health among elderly men and post-menopausal women, suggesting that increased vitamin D intake can improve bone health and prevent falls. For other age groups and health issues, though, it is too early to say conclusively whether more vitamin D might be beneficial.
A group of young scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University are developing a bioactive coating for medical implants. Due to its properties, it will be able to "convince" the body not to reject the artificial bones and joints.
Craig Young, MD, was awarded the 2012 Founders Award at the 21th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Atlanta on April 24, 2012. The award is not given annually, but is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that someone exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.
