Women who are desperately trying to get pregnant might want to avoid complementary and alternative medicine. The common belief is that it won't hurt to try alternative fertility treatments before reverting to in vitro fertilization (IVF). But a new study from Denmark finds that the success of IVF treatment is 30% lower among women who have used alternative medicine.
The researchers followed international standards for systematic reviews, performed a comprehensive search, and gathered findings from 32 relevant studies published between 1936 and 2020. This study is published on the medRxiv* preprint server.
The Affordable Care Act - Obamacare - has endured so many near-death experiences that digging into the details of still another effort to demolish it is admittedly not an inviting prospect. (My own reaction, I confess, to hearing some months back about the latest legal challenge - this one aimed at the supposed effect of a single word in the 900-page statute - was something along the lines of "wake me when it's over.") But stay with me, because this latest round, catapulted onto the Supreme Court's docket earlier this month by the same forces that brought us the failed Commerce Clause attack two years ago, opens a window on raw judicial politics so extreme that the saga so far would be funny if the potential consequences weren't so serious (Linda Greenhouse, 8/20).
A new, innovative form of radiation based on verified scientific facts will be available to patients all over Europe within the next few decades. The official kick-off meeting of the Community project ULICE (Union of LIght Ions Centres in Europe), which the European Union is supporting with nearly 10 million euros, was held in fall 2009 in the Department of Radiooncology and Radiation Therapy of the Heidelberg University Hospital.
