Three-quarters of all breast cancer tumors are driven by the hormone estrogen. These tumors are frequently treated with drugs to suppress estrogen receptor activity, but unfortunately, at least half of patients do not respond to these treatments, leaving them with drug-resistant tumors and few options.
In light of a recent Guttmacher Institute report that indicated 70,000 women in developing countries die each year from unsafe abortion, a Lancet editorial outlines ways to reduce deaths, and says, "The current political climate is favourable, because the global-gag rule (the U.S. Government's policy on banning funding of foreign organisations linked to any type of abortion practice) is out of favour" (10/17).
Today, the Canadian Diabetes Association launched "Get Checked Now" - a national public awareness campaign aimed at Canadians 40 and older alerting them to the consequences of being passive about their potential risk for developing type 2 diabetes and leading them to take action against the disease by getting checked now.
