BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. announced today preliminary results from ADAPT (A Diversified Approach for PKU Treatment) in an abstract (Abstract #91, Mental Health Screening in Phenylketoniuria Clinic) presented by Barbara Burton, MD at the 2011 annual American College of Medical Genetics conference in Vancouver, Canada.
Research by UCLA biochemists may lead to a new treatment - or even a cure - for PH1, a rare and potentially deadly genetic kidney disease that afflicts children. Their findings also may provide important insights into treatments for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative diseases.
Researchers at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center report promising outcomes from a clinical trial with patients with a rare form of bone marrow failure who received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) after pre-treatment with immunosuppressive drugs only. This is the first trial reporting successful transplant in dyskeratosis congenita (DC) patients without the use of any radiation or conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy beforehand.
