Visitors attending the Minnesota State Fair will find some great health deals when they stop by Health Fair 11 at the Fair. More than a dozen organizations will offer free or low-cost health screenings. Among the screenings are: cholesterol testing (non-fasting), diabetes screening (glucose - non-fasting), blood pressure checks, blood typing, hearing and vision assessments, bone density and body fat measurements, and weight readings.
Federal regulators have approved a state plan to pay hospitals an additional $87 million this year for the care they provide to low-income Ohioans on Medicaid. The funds will be disbursed to hospitals by the end of this month. The bulk payment and a 5 percent increase in Medicaid reimbursement fees effective in October were included in last year's state budget to let hospitals recoup some of the money they were losing through a new state franchise fee. The fee is projected to cost hospitals statewide $718 million over the two-year budget ending June 30, 2011.
A neuroscientist at Rutgers University-Newark says the human brain operates much the same whether active or at rest - a finding that could provide a better understanding of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other serious mental health conditions that afflict an estimated 13.6 million Americans.
Democrats are promising to send President Obama a health reform plan this year as Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus continues to try to get key Republicans on board with a new proposal.
