News Archive
9 new projects aimed at uncovering links between diet and health and worth a total of £4M are announced today by a public-private partnership of three research councils (BBSRC, EPSRC and MRC) and 13 food and drink companies. The new projects tackle issues such as reducing fat content or proportion of saturated fat in food, fortification with bioactive compounds including Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants and increasing the dietary fibre in white bread.
Obesity and diabetes in both adults and children are rising at alarming rates and a wide range of culprits - super-sized food portions, lack of exercise due to television, computers, suburban sprawl and loss of gym classes, high-fat and fast foods, sugar-laden drinks and psychological trauma - have been blamed.
Evotec AG today announced that via its subsidiary Develogen AG it has entered into a license and collaboration agreement with MedImmune (the global biologics unit of AstraZeneca), in the diabetes therapeutic area, with a particular focus on the regeneration of insulin producing beta cells. A University of Limerick study has found that parents of children with learning or developmental disabilities have an increased risk of depression and are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions. The figures showed that 15% of parents of children with disabilities were classified as depressed and unfortunately less than half of them reported being treated for depression.
