Pittcon 2017 commenced with a fascinating talk by world-renowned optogenetics expert Dr. Karl Deisseroth, D.H. Chen Professor of Bioengineering, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
The nerve cells that transmit pain signals in the body are called nociceptors. When activated they release pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. In order to recognise harmful external influences, nociceptors are equipped with a wide range of receptors.
A new device that offers drug-free bedside filtered air flow can significantly reduce patients' symptoms such as wheezing and tight chests in asthmatics. The temperature controlled laminar airflow treatment, called Protexo, filters out airborne triggers such as dust particles and mites, pet hairs and powders that cause irritation and inflammation of the lungs.
The proposal was offered by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., who chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the top Republican on the Finance Committee.
