WHO's World Malaria Report 2009, which was released on Tuesday, found "increased funding is starting to pay off in the battle against malaria but prevention and treatment must be increased to try to halt the killer disease," Reuters reports (Kelland, 12/15). According to the Associated Press, there were more than 240 million cases of malaria and an estimated 863,000 people, mostly in Africa, died of the disease in 2008 (Cheng, 12/15).
One of the outstanding questions in neurodevelopment research has been identifying how connections in the brain change to improve neural function during childhood and adolescence.
The proposed rules, issued on Thursday, require studies showing that the generic copies are "highly similar" to the originals, but there are several ways that might be proven. Because of their complexity, generic copies of biotech drugs - first introduced in the 1980s - are known as "biosimilars." The worldwide market for copies of biotech medicines will grow to $3.7 billion by 2015, from just $243 million in 2010, as more than 30 branded biologics with sales of $51 billion lose patent exclusivity, according to market analysis firm Datamonitor.
Buoyed by the chance for a fresh start in the New Year, an overwhelming majority of Americans are hopeful for a renewed commitment to fitness in 2011, according to a national omnibus survey conducted by 24 Hour Fitness. 24 Hour Fitness, the largest privately-owned U.S. fitness club chain and a leading health club industry pioneer, recently commissioned the study to measure consumer attitudes about exercise and the obstacles that most often prevent people from pursuing a fit lifestyle.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. today announced its subsidiary, Alkaloida Chemical Company Exclusive Group Ltd. (Alkaloida), has extended the Expiration Date of the Tender Offer for the purchase of all outstanding Ordinary Shares of Taro Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Taro).
