A new parent's health literacy, defined as their ability to obtain, interpret and understand basic health information, can affect their ability to follow recommendations to protect infants from injury, finds a new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
The study found that stress experienced by young female rats can impair their future offspring, but can also improve resilience. The study also showed that providing the young stressed females with an enriched environment, can indeed ameliorate some of the effects.
The latest figures reveal that the number of new mothers who start breastfeeding is rising. A UK-wide survey showed eight out of ten newborns were put to the breast at least once, up from six out of ten in 1990. The proportion of new mothers who start to breastfeed their babies has risen in the past five years from 76% to 81% across the UK.
