A unique approach to understanding how cells develop resistance to drugs has won a scientist at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center a New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of Health.
With a range of diseases, doctors need unique features which they can use to unequivocally identify a patient's illness for an appropriate diagnosis. Scientists therefore search for the biomarkers for an illness or a combination of biomarkers, known as biosignatures, which are as easy as possible to measure.

UT Southwestern researchers have identified factors that put patients with childhood-onset lupus at elevated risk for poor outcomes, such as end-stage renal disease or death, as they transition from pediatric to adult health care.
"Results from a groundbreaking trial of three drugs given in combination - one of them completely new and one not yet licensed for this use - killed more than 99 percent of patients' [tuberculosis (TB)] bacteria after two weeks of treatment," and the combination "appears to be equally effective on drug-resistant TB," the Guardian reports.
