School meals should adhere to strict guidelines on sugar and fat content, all unhealthy food and fizzy drinks vending machines in schools should be banned and there should be no junk food advertising or sponsorship. These are the some of the recommendations in the BMA's report Preventing Childhood Obesity, launched yesterday [22 June 2005].
Cmed Group, an innovative clinical trials services and advanced software provider, announced today that it has been selected as one of six preferred providers offering its clinical research expertise to a consortium of 14 global health Product Development Partnerships (PDPs). The PDPs are working to develop and deliver affordable treatments and vaccines that will help improve the lives of the some of the world's most vulnerable people, especially those in developing countries.
A recent study published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica found that sons born to mothers who fell within the overweight range were more likely to be diagnosed with infertility during adulthood than sons of mothers with normal-range weight.
Ardea Biosciences, Inc. has announced positive results from a Phase 1 study in normal, healthy volunteers of RDEA594, its lead product candidate for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout, and a pilot Phase 2a proof-of-concept study in gout patients of RDEA594's prodrug, RDEA806 (RDEA806 is converted to RDEA594 in the body).
With the publication of the nation's first comprehensive, federally funded guide to hospital emergency preparedness exercise development, Dr. Nathaniel Hupert at Weill Cornell Medical College and his collaborators have provided a new toolset for strengthening hospitals' ability to protect communities nationwide against public health disasters, such as creating care centers during an influenza pandemic or treating casualties in the wake of a bioterrorism attack.
