State highlights: Ore. targets waste with uniform credentialing; Managed care lessons from Calif.

The Oregon House passed a bill with unanimous support Monday that supporters say could save the economy $150 million in administrative waste by crafting a single credentialing process that all insurers, hospitals and coordinated care organizations can share for thousands of health care providers. If Gov. Kitzhaber signs Senate Bill 604 into law, Oregon will also be the first state to have a uniform, electronic credentialing database where each provider can be quickly accessed.

FDA approves Mirapex ER tablets for signs and symptoms of idiopathic PD

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved once-daily Mirapex ERĀ® (pramipexole dihydrochloride) extended-release tablets for the signs and symptoms of idiopathic Parkinson's disease, which includes early and advanced PD. PD is the second most common chronic neurological disorder in older adults after Alzheimer's. Parkinson's disease has no cure.

Tobacco product regulations announced by FDA

This Wednesday the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released guidelines regarding agency approval for certain types of new products to be obtained by tobacco-product makers. FDA announced that products such as cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless products that were introduced or changed after Feb. 15, 2007 must be reviewed by the agency to show that they are "substantially equivalent" to products commercially available on Feb. 15, 2007.

Manuka honey inhibits MRSA infections by killing bacterial proteins

Manuka honey may kill bacteria by destroying key bacterial proteins. Dr Rowena Jenkins and colleagues from the University of Wales Institute - Cardiff investigated the mechanisms of manuka honey action and found that its anti-bacterial properties were not due solely to the sugars present in the honey.
