Study examines restrictive strategy of RBC transfusion in patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery

Use of stricter guidelines for the use of red blood cell transfusions for patients undergoing cardiac surgery was associated similar rates of death and severe illness compared to patients who received more transfusions, according to a study in the October 13 issue of JAMA. Another study in this issue of JAMA examines the variation in the use of blood transfusions for patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

AltheRx Pharmaceuticals, a privately-held clinical development company, today announced the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a Notice of Allowance for the company's U.S. Patent Application claiming a method of use for solabegron, a beta 3-adrenergic receptor agonist, in combination with all commercially available antimuscarinics at both therapeutic and sub-therapeutic doses for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB).

MSM remain most at-risk group for HIV in Beijing, official says

Beijing's community of men who have sex with men are most at risk of contracting HIV, He Xiong, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday, China Daily reports. According to He, 5% of MSM in the city are HIV-positive.
