CWRU honors academic and environmental activist with Inamori Ethics Prize

Case Western Reserve University President Barbara R. Snyder yesterday announced that the Inamori Foundation has committed an additional $1 million to advance the work of the university's Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence. Certain ARID1a mutations sensitize some tumors to PARP inhibitor drugs

Mutations in ARID1a, which are common in many cancer types, disrupt DNA damage repair in cancer cells, allowing the cancer to progress. This gene may also be an Achilles' heel when treating certain tumors, according to a team of researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Clinical scientists call for a reform in clinical psychology training programs

The prevalence of mental health disorders in this country has nearly doubled in the past 20 years. Who is treating all of these patients? Clinical psychologists and therapists are charged with the task, but many are falling short by using methods that are out of date and lack scientific rigor. This is in part because many of the training programs-especially some Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) programs and for-profit training centers-are not grounded in science.

Teens driving under influence of marijuana: Study finds

The survey was conducted by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). They looked at 2,300 eleventh and twelfth graders and found more than one-third of teens who have driven after using marijuana say the drug doesn't distract them from driving. What's more, one in five teens admitted to driving high. In addition the survey found 13 percent of teens said they had got behind the wheel after drinking, while 19 percent did not consider drinking a major distraction.
