LIN28B gene influences height growth in a sex-specific manner

Researchers at the University of Helsinki and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) have shown that a gene called LIN28B strongly influences height growth from birth to adulthood in a complex and sex-spesific manner.

Emodin raises hope for treatment of fibrotic liver diseases

In the last decade, advances in the understanding of genes promoting hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation are impressive. However, there are few breakthroughs in therapeutic intervention of hepatic fibrogenesis. Efficient and well-tolerated antifibrotic drugs are lacking and current treatment of hepatic fibrosis is limited to withdrawal of the noxious agent. Rosetta Genomics, Ltd., a leading developer and provider of microRNA-based molecular diagnostic tests, announced today the receipt of a new notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO") for U.S. patent application 11/418,870, including claims related to Sanger hsa-miR-451. miR-451 is used in the Company's miRviewâ„¢ mets test, which accurately identifies the primary tumor site in patients with metastatic cancer and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP).

Researchers compare cardiovascular safety of two commonly used oral estrogen medications

The oral hormone therapy conjugated equine estrogens, which is used by women to relieve menopause symptoms, appears to be associated with increased risk for venous thrombosis (VT, blood clots) and possibly myocardial infarction (heart attack), but not ischemic stroke risk, when compared with the hormone therapy oral estradiol, according to a study published by JAMA Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Researchers discover how the injured brain alerts immune system

Johns Hopkins researchers say they have identified a new way that cells in the brain alert the rest of the body to recruit immune cells when the brain is injured. The work was completed in mouse models that mimic infection, stroke or trauma in humans.
