Addiction experts seek to understand why people engage in 'extreme' drinking

It's a health crisis often hidden in plain sight. While binge drinking behaviors - drinking alcohol to a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.08% or higher - have been studied before, relatively little research has focused on people's behaviors and the consequences surrounding "extreme" drinking, or drinking alcohol to a blood alcohol concentration level of more than 0.16%.

California lawmakers raising smoking age to curb teen smoking

With California lawmakers voting this month to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 years of age, questions are being raised about its impact. Although much of the discussion of the policy has centered on the 18 to 20 year-olds who will no longer be able to buy cigarettes, the real focus should be its potential to keep cigarettes away from high school students 14 to 17 years old, said John Billimek, a researcher with the Health Policy Research Institute in the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

Ottawa Citizen examines water, sanitation in East Africa

An Ottawa Citizen article examines Canada-based charity WaterCan's projects in East Africa. "This year, WaterCan has worked with local African partners to retro-fit more than 50 schools [in] Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania - and has just launched a major Christmas funding drive to expand their work in schools next year.
