Study finds transcranial direct-current stimulation to be less effective than anti-depressants

A new study questions the efficacy of treatments for depression based on stimulating brain areas with low-intensity electric current. The technique, known as transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS), was considered a promising alternative to treatment with antidepressant drugs.

Cost of elderly and long term care set to double by 2050: Report

A report from the Organization for Economic Co–operation and Development (OECD) has shown that long term care costs are set to double by 2050 thanks to an ageing population. It shows that even those on above–average incomes could spend 60% of their disposable income on care costs. By 2050, the UK will spend more than a fifth of its entire national output on services for the elderly.

UH researcher investigates two new avenues for detection, treatment of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy and second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the U.S. The challenge with prostate cancer is that the standard treatment methods in the advanced stage of the disease lose effectiveness after about one to two years, leading to recurrence and, ultimately, death. A University of Houston researcher and his team are working to change that.
