For more than 100 years, the traditional treatment for the painful growths called gallstones has been removal of the gallbladder, or cholecystectomy. But a new device, patented in China, promises to make removing the entire organ unnecessary. A group of scientists from the Second People's Hospital of Panyu District and Central South University in China have developed an endoscope specially designed for locating and clearing out gallstones and other gallbladder lesions.
A recently discovered protein complex known as STING plays a crucial role in detecting the presence of tumor cells and promoting an aggressive anti-tumor response by the body's innate immune system, according to two separate studies published in the Nov. 20 issue of the journal Immunity.
Getinge (STO:GETIB) has secured 78.55% of the outstanding shares in Pulsion Medical Systems. All conditions precedent stipulated in the offer document have been met and the transaction was completed yesterday. Pulsion will be consolidated in Getinge's accounts as of March 1 2014.
"Grand Challenges Canada just announced grants of $100,000 for 102 imaginative new ideas to tackle health problems in resource-poor countries," Inter Press Service reports, noting, "Of these, 59 grants went to researchers in 13 low- and middle-income nations worldwide."

The California-based drug maker increased the price of its biggest seller, HIV treatment Atripla, by 5.1%. Gilead also raised the price of HIV drugs Truvada and Emtriva by 7.9%.
