The Department of Orthopaedics at Stony Brook University Medical Center and the Office of Continuing Medical Education will run a CME program for hand surgeons, hand therapists, rheumatologists, researchers and others interested in understanding the latest treatment and research on Dupuytren's disease, a debilitating hand disorder caused by progressive accumulation of collagen that deforms fingers and limits motion and affects millions worldwide.
Obesity, already a global epidemic, is on the rise. Over one-third of the U.S. population is currently afflicted, according to the Centers for Disease Control and the monetary costs alone are approaching $150 billion dollars annually.
Here's another reason why you should take your vitamins. A new research report appearing in the October 2009 print issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology (http://www.jleukbio.org) suggests that retinoic acid, the oxidized form of vitamin A, could be a beneficial treatment for people suffering from ulcerative colitis and other irritable bowel diseases.
At present all new mothers are screened for symptoms of depression and help is provided to those who need care. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now has urged doctors to screen pregnant women for risks of depression and provide adequate counselling and support to prevent the onset of depression after delivery. The report was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association this week.
