Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, today announced that it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the LigaSure curved, small jaw, open sealer/divider surgical instrument to be used in ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures.
A new study in Journal of the American Heart Association, reveals that drinking 32 ounces of an energy drink with 320 milligrams (mg) of caffeine results in intense changes in the electrical activity of the heart and in blood pressure, compared with drinking 32 ounces of a control drink with the same amount of caffeine in it.
The Associated Press: "Makers of X-ray machines, drug pumps and other medical devices would have to submit more safety information to win federal approval under a proposal designed to tighten regulation of thousands of products reviewed each year. The Food and Drug Administration released recommendations Tuesday night designed to improve oversight of the U.S. device industry, including the government's ability to revoke approval for products that prove unsafe or ineffective" (Perrone, 8/3).
Theraclion, a company specializing in advanced medical equipment for echotherapy (or ultrasound therapy), has unveiled very positive initial clinical results in the treatment of thyroid nodules. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of its Echopulse device in the treatment of this condition.
