Human adenovirus (HAdV) infections in Singapore and Malaysia have caused severe respiratory disease among children and adults in recent years, but scientists still don't know whether these outbreaks are due to new or re-emerging virus strains.
A Lancet Infectious Diseases editorial describes the growing public concerns over a global rise in antimicrobial resistance. "Bearing in mind that our objective is to contain antibiotic resistance rather than eradicate it, several policies could be adopted to help guarantee a future for antibiotics," the editorial states, adding, "We need reliable data to tackle antibiotic resistance.
Arteriocyte, Inc., was honored Friday by the Ohio Venture Association as a Venture of Year Award Finalist. Founded in 2004 to develop proprietary stem cell and tissue engineering based therapies, Arteriocyte focuses on developing commercially available stem cell based therapies using multiple sources of adult derived stem cells (marrow, peripheral cord blood, and cartilage) for delivery to injured tissues in order to speed repair and improve function.
In a post in the BMJ Group Blogs, Katy Cooper, senior project manager at C3 Collaborating for Health, describes "what is happening around the global framework on non-communicable diseases, and how NCDs link into discussions on the successors to the Millennium Development Goals (due to expire in 2015) and the proposed new set of Sustainable Development Goals (as proposed at the Rio+20 conference in 2012)."
