Researchers have demonstrated that conditioned pain modulation (CPM), a measure of the brain's ability to regulate pain, decreases activity in the human spinal cord as visible via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
A study released today of 36,210 adult tonsillectomy patients finds that 20 percent will have a complication, offering valuable new insights to a decades long discussion. The study, featured in the April 2014 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, examines the prevalence of complications in adult tonsillectomies and the impact on health care expenditures.
Patients understanding their medications and taking them as instructed are important parts of improving the care and outcomes of heart attack patients, as well as potentially reducing avoidable readmissions, according to research presented at the ACC Quality Summit in New Orleans.

But can the growing number of wellness programs at work make employees healthier than they would otherwise be? According to recent research, such programs around the country save $1.9 trillion in health care costs per year. Makes sense, since a large portion of health care costs are spent treating preventable conditions.
A new study led by Mark Zimmerman, MD, of Rhode Island Hospital indicates that a majority of non-psychiatrist physicians and a substantial minority of psychiatrists reported that they often do not use the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) when diagnosing major depressive disorder (MDD) in patients. The study appears online ahead of print in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
