They did the first procedure of its kind by injecting the dissolvable liquid device into a patient - a Victorian grandmother. The device flows to the damaged heart muscle and helps it repair. The liquid is derived from seaweed and was injected into Pauline Fulton's heart, a fortnight ago, two days after she suffered a major heart attack.
In a stark BMA report, 'The Human Cost of Tobacco', published today, (9 November 2004), doctors chronicle individual stories behind the statistics to show how second-hand smoke destroys lives and health.
Our members deeply regret the needless tragedies outlined in the Times articles and express our sympathy to the families who have lost loved ones and witnessed their suffering. Our hearts also go out to all others whose lives have been impacted by these tragedies including therapists, physicians and physicists. We feel that, as radiation oncology professionals, we are all, directly or indirectly, responsible for these disastrous treatment errors and we therefore must, in future, take a more active role to assure episodes like these are never repeated.
Research at the University of Warwick have taken high tech gas sensors normally used to test components for premium cars and applied the same techniques to human blood, human urine, and even cow dung samples from local cow pats.
Building on earlier work exploring the complex choreography by which intricate cellular proteins interact with and copy DNA prior to cell division, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and collaborators have captured a key step-molecular images showing how the enzyme that unwinds the DNA double helix gets drawn to and wrapped around its target.
