By identifying a key signaling defect within a specific membrane structure in all cells, University of California, Irvine researchers believe, they have found both a possible reliable biomarker for diagnosing certain forms of autism and a potential therapeutic target.
We all know that people and animals can be harmed by excessive heat; so can medications, states Dr. Amy Peak, director of Drug Information Services for Butler University.
Patients with severely injured limbs often suffer a devastating loss of sensation. The implants, called "nerve guidance conduits" or NGCs were produced by British and German engineers with a laser technique normally used to write complex electrical circuits. Made from a form of biodegradable plastic, they guide regrowing nerve fibres through individual channels to aid recovery. Once the nerves are fully regrown and reconnected, the device dissolves away.
Research by investigators at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center suggests that physicians should screen patients with lung cancer for MET amplification/overexpression before determining a treatment strategy.
