Blood clots are the biggest cause of death in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) ─ ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. In a retrospective study recently published in the journal Gastroenterology, Cedars-Sinai investigators found that a combination of rare and common genetic variants in some IBD patients significantly increased their risk of developing clot-causing thromboembolic diseases.
At the moment, doctors rely on biopsy analysis to determine the progression of eye cancer. However, researchers now believe that a new technology, bioluminescence imaging (BLI), will allow doctors to detect tumors earlier and quickly choose a method of treatment that doesn't necessarily involve eye surgery.
Teleflex Incorporated, a global provider of medical technology products, announced today that its Arrow® NextStep™ Antegrade Chronic Hemodialysis Catheter has received market clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The NextStep Antegrade Chronic Hemodialysis Catheter is designed to attain long-term vascular access for hemodialysis and apheresis.
It's possible that a lock of hair could one day aid in the diagnosis of depression and in efforts to monitor the effects of treatment, said the author of a new study examining cortisol levels in the hair of teens.
Pittsburgh-based food and fuel retailer Giant Eagle, Inc. launched its free antibiotics program in September of 2009, and is pleased to announce that the program has resulted in more than $3 million in free prescriptions for customers in the company's four-state operating area.
