Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company developing peptide therapeutics for metabolic diseases, announced today that it has completed the first close on its Series A equity financing of $21 million. The financing was led by MPM Capital and New Enterprise Associates. The funds will be used to develop products licensed from Ipsen.
An abrupt, fatal heart attack in a young athlete on the playing field is a tragedy destined to repeat itself over and over until more is understood about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic disorder that is the most common cause of sudden death in young people but which affects people of all ages.
Researchers have found that using e-cigarettes with the e-liquid refills containing propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) may lead to inflammation of the lungs over a period of time. The results of the study titled, "Effects of Electronic Cigarette Constituents on the Human Lung: A Pilot Clinical Trial," was published in the latest issue of the journal Cancer Prevention Research this week.
The RAND Corp. study looks at 14 states refusing to expand the federal-state program for the poor under the health law and concludes their share of the costs would be lower than providing uncompensated care to uninsured residents.
