According to a World Health Organization (WHO) warning Sunday, the widely used blood tests to detect tuberculosis (TB) are "dangerous" to patients because they are unreliable and can produce incorrect results. The WHO announced that it will issue an unprecedented recommendation against using such tests for the infectious lung disease that affects some 14 million people worldwide. As much as a third of the world's population is thought to harbor the bacteria that cause TB.
In an interview with the Des Moines Register, President Barack Obama said he'll begin sequester talks right after the election, offering a package of spending cuts and tax increases as well as plans to reduce the costs of health care programs. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reports that leaders of some of the nation's largest companies plan to pressure Congress to make a deal that would include tax increases as well as spending cuts.

Marinomed Biotechnologie GmbH, a company focused on the development of innovative therapies for respiratory diseases, announced today that it has signed a licensing agreement with the international pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. The deal will aim to further extend marketing of Marinomed's anti-viral nasal spray for the treatment of the Common Cold to all of Europe (except Austria and UK), Russia and CIS, South America, parts of Asia and Australia.
