University of Florida chemists are the first to use a new tool to identify the molecular signatures of serious diseases - without any previous knowledge of what these microscopic signatures or "biomarkers" should look like.
Researchers have developed a system that concentrates foodborne salmonella and other pathogens faster than conventional methods by using hollow thread-like fibers that filter out the cells, representing a potential new tool for speedier detection.
A study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that when people use commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for treating pain and inflammation, the risk of heart attack increases as early as in the first week of consumption and particularly within the first month of using such medication in high doses.
Researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine compared the outcomes of cirrhotic patients who underwent liver transplants for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) versus alcoholic liver disease (ETOH) and found no statistically significant differences in post-transplant survival rates between the NASH and ETOH groups
