Nearly 50 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. While age is the greatest risk factor for developing the disease, researchers believe most Alzheimer's cases occur as a result of complex interactions among genes and other factors. But those factors and the role they play are not known-yet.
Doctors have long known that patients with carotid artery stenosis, narrowed blood vessels in the neck, are at significant risk for a stroke. The condition has severe implications. Annually, in the United States, 795,000 patients have strokes that often result in long-term disability or death. For years, however, researchers in North America and Europe have tried to determine the most effective method to treat narrowed or partially blocked carotid vessels.
A new understanding of how anesthesia and anesthesia-like states are controlled in the brain opens the door to possible new future treatments of various states of loss of consciousness, such as reversible coma, according to Hebrew University of Jerusalem scientists.
