Antibodies directed against the protein CD20, which is expressed by immune cells known as B cells, are used to treat B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and rheumatoid arthritis.
A new study from the National Centre for Biotechnology and Medicinal Chemistry Institute suggests Mother Nature delivered — in the form of liverworts. They found that the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha, also known as umbrella liverworts, could work as a potential antiviral treatment.
Platelets are cells in the blood that have a key role in stopping bleeding. Thrombocytopenia is the medical term used to describe the presence of abnormally low numbers of platelets in the blood. Platelet transfusion is used to treat several causes of thrombocytopenia, but there is a shortage of donors. Mortimer Poncz and colleagues, at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, working with mice, have now identified a potential new approach to platelet replacement therapy that circumvents the problem of donor shortage.
Antimuscarinics "could and should" be used in the pharmacological treatment of men with lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia or bladder outlet obstruction, say the authors of a meta-analysis published in Urology.
