A scientific symposium on celiac disease, "Genetic and Immune Mechanisms in Celiac Disease," will be held at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine on Friday, February 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The symposium, hosted by UCSD's newly established William K. Warren Medical Research Center for Celiac Disease, will be held at the university's Center for Molecular Genetics conference room.
Jason Carter, associate vice president for research development and professor of kinesiology and integrative physiology, is speaking at the 2018 National Institute of Health Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Research Conference on Sleep and the Health of Women in Bethesda, Maryland.

Women, who suffer from an extreme form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), are shelling out $7,000 for a drug not yet approved for use by expectant mums because they are desperate to control their illness. HG leads to severe nausea, dehydration and fatigue and may require hospitalization. It affects up to 3 per cent of pregnant women - about 9,000 per year in Australia. It may lead to termination of the pregnancy.
A small new study suggests that pregnant smokers with low scores on a scale that rates emotional attachment to their fetuses may be inclined to smoke more than pregnant smokers who feel more attached to their future babies.
