While a popular target, beating up on health insurance companies will do little to provide changes in insurance costs. Insurance profits and overhead are just a small part of the insurance bill. It's the underlying medical services, technology, tests and drugs that drive cost.
Fibromyalgia is almost impossible to diagnose. The chronic pain syndrome strikes an estimated 1 in 70 Americans, most of them women. The disorder is often triggered by head trauma, a neurological infection, or severe emotional stress, and is characterized by symptoms such as musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, memory loss and mood swings. Fibromyalgia is often mistaken for other culprits and most patients suffer months, even years, of unrelenting pain before being properly diagnosed. And once diagnosed, patients enjoy little respite because few therapies have been found to be effective in assuaging its symptoms.
Following the results of a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine showing that cognitive behavioural therapy produces a 41% reduction in fatal and non-fatal first recurrent CVD events, the European Society of Cardiology believes stress management programmes should be made more widely available across Europe for patients with coronary artery disease.
Crescent Healthcare today announced a planned expansion of their east coast operations in 2011. They signed a lease to open an infusion pharmacy in Totowa, New Jersey, central to providing immune globulin therapies and services to current patients in Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, and Rhode Island.
Drug makers frequently ignore a federal requirement that they submit "pricing data needed to calculate discounts on medications prescribed for poor people under Medicaid, federal investigators say in a new report," The New York Times reports.
