A new study from Aarhus University Hospital and Aarhus University, Denmark, has shown that probably 1 in 4 people in the world carry the tuberculosis bacterium in the body.
A decade-long JDRF-funded study led by the Institute of Diabetes Research in Helmholtz Zentrum M-nchen, Germany, is providing a deeper understanding of the link between autoantibodies and the risk of developing type 1 diabetes, highlighting the importance of pre-diabetes research into possible preventions for the disease.
The biological complexity of cancer and other diseases demands a more formidable arsenal of therapies than currently available. Most therapeutic approaches ignore the dynamic molecular network of genes, targeting instead only very few selected disease-related genes.
"Saturday marked the third anniversary of the tragic earthquake in Haiti that claimed between 230,000 and 300,000 lives," Vijaya Ramachandran and Julie Walz of the Center for Global Development write in the Guardian's "Poverty Matters Blog," adding, "The grim landmark has prompted much discussion about the struggles surrounding reconstruction and also some hope about what may come next."
